The 2400-page historical Tamil novel Ponniyin Selvan, authored by Kalki Krishnamurthy, was published in the 20th century.
Five volumes were written to tell the tale of Arulmozhivarman, a monarch of the Chola Dynasty who reigned between the 10th and the 11th century and who was eventually called Rajaraja Chola I.
After nearly three and a half years of writing, Kalki completed the book. To research the book, he made three trips to Sri Lanka. The protagonist of the novel is Vandiyathevan, a lovely, courageous, and intelligent young man who travels to the Chola region to deliver a letter from Crown Prince Aditya Karikalan to the King and Princess.
The narrative alternates between Vandiyathevan’s journey across Chola territory and the youthful Prince Arulmozhivarman’s journey through Sri Lanka.
The story centres on his sister Kundavai’s attempts to bring back Arulmozhi in order to maintain political stability in a nation that appears to be on the verge of civil war and upheaval. In addition, among others, the Chola monarchs Karikal Peruvalathan, Killivalavan, Nedunkilli, and Perunkilli are the subjects of the first evidence for the Chola dynasty.
